Page 16 Daily Citizen Traffic Deaths Expected To Be Lower United Press International Safety officials monitoring holiday traffic fatalities urged motorists to stay sober and two Los Angeles bystanders chased down a drunken driving suspect who witnesses said killed two people waiting for a bus The National Safety Council estimated 400 to 500 people would die in Thanksgiving traffic accidents nationwide and between 17000 and 22000 would be injured during the weekend which began at 6 pm local time Wednesday and ends at midnight Sunday LAST year 433 people lost their lives while traveling during the Thanksgiving weekend A United Press In ternational count early today showed at least 91 people had died in traffic accidents since the holiday weekend began Thirteen people had died in California eight in Texas seven people each in Oklahoma and lorida six in New York and five each in Mississippi and Georgia In Los Angeles two bystanders collared a drunken driving suspect and held him for police Witnesses said the car jumped a curb and plowed into a bus bench killing two men and in juring two others on Thanksgiving Day Three teenagers were killed Wednesday night in a two car crash on a county road in Mississippi Troopers are trying to prevent a repeat of the worst Thanksgiving weekend 1981 when 33 people died in traffic accidents A 1 year old boy was killed Wednesday night when he was thrown from a car that struck a tree in North Carolina Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Larry Todd said officials expected a lower fatal toll than in previous years because many people returned to work today and because more drivers are aware of tough new drunken driving laws effective Jan 1 "One reason we think the holiday count would be down is because riday is not a holiday for everyone and therefore there may not be that much of traffic We just hope people will stay sober while Todd said "We may be seeing a downward trend in the number of fatalities for the whole year IS also possible that people are becoming more aware of our new DWI (driving while intoxicated) laws that go into effect on Jan 1 Those new lawswill provide for mandatory jail time for repeat offenders and drivers can lose their license if he or she refuses to take the breath test These provisions are not available under current NSC spokesman Steve ord said the Chicago based council was urging driyers to stay sober use seatbelts and be courteous on the road Shuttle Contact To Be Tried MILWAUKEE Ham radio operators in the Milwaukee area will be attempting to com municate with the space shuttle Columbia as it orbits the earth next week The space shuttle is set to take off Monday from the Kennedy Space Center Project coordinator Richard McGavern said this is the first time NASA will allow the public to attempt to communicate with astronauts manning a space shuttle I riday November 25 1983 11 iSKl 1 Jah EV AamMl SEhL JL MR?
