Ann was born Sept. 24, 1938, in Poynette, devoted daughter to Therman and Dorothy Fairchild Deer- wester, and beloved sister to Marshall F.

Deerwester and Stephen D. Deerwester, who have all preceded her in death. In 1957, Ann graduated at the top of her class from Rio High School, greatly honored to be her valedictorian. She went on to study busi- ness at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ann married William P.

Sher- idan on Aug. 16, 1958, and together they raised their son, Christopher Sheridan of Colorado Springs, Col- orado. After living in Kansas, Texas, Arizona, Califor- nia and Colorado, Ann returned to Wisconsin in 1978, where she spent many years serving as the benefits specialist at the Aging and Disability Re- source Center of Columbia County. Ann loved to read and enjoyed classical music, cross-stitch, Sudoku and gardening. She was also a very avid fan of both the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers.

Most importantly though, Ann was a compassionate and loyal friend, as well as a supportive advocate for the elderly. Ann will be missed by her son, Christopher (Paula) Sheridan; as well as her grandson, Kyle Sheri- dan; her granddaughter, Kerry (Luis) Salcedo; and her great-grandson, LJ Salcedo, all of Colorado Springs, Colorado. There will be a graveside service for Ann in May at Blossomberg Cemetery, Door County. In lieu of flowers, memorial dona- tions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10004.

The family wishes to ex- tend their gratitude to St. Hospital, and to Lois Williams and Vivian Black for their support and care for Ann especially in her final days. OBITUARY LISA CESTKOWSKI FALL RIVER They say dog is best friend, but Tuesday afternoon, it was man who was best friend, when the Fall River Fire Department rescued Bentley, a 2 labradoodle who fell through thin ice on Lazy Lake. ordeal began after the cable she was tied to broke and she decided to make a run for it.

When her owner Jane Lucht, who lives on the channel about 150 yards up river from the dam, noticed the dog tied up any- more, she went searching. She called name. She recruited a neighbor to help. She notified police. But Bentley apparently enjoyed her freedom at first, anyway.

When Lucht finally caught sight of the dog, she was running out onto the lake, which after being open over the week- end, had once again devel- oped a thin layer of ice on top of it. saw her run out on the ice and I was sure she had made it to the other Lucht said. But then Bentley disap- peared again, leaving Lucht and her neighbor to resume their search. Finally, they heard a woman who lived across the lake yelling to them. The woman had just come home from work, heard a noise down by the water and discovered a dog there, par- tially submerged, but hang- ing onto the ice with her front paws.

She called the fire department, and then called out to the women on the other side of the channel. hopped in my car to drive over there right Lucht said. The police department was already on the scene, and the fire department, includ- ing Capt. Gary Gottschalk and two firefighters wearing Mustang cold weather wet- suits, arrived shortly. Bentley was 15 or 20 yards off shore, and she was strug- gling.

(Gottschalk declined to identify the two firefighters.) The water was proba- bly 3 feet deep, and the ice the firefighter was on was about of an inch to an inch thick, Gottschalk said. The thin ice held, as the firefighter crawled out to Bentley and scooped her up out of the water. went running back to Gottschalk said.

Then she called her vet, who recommended giving her some warm liquid to drink. gave her a couple of cups of warm Lucht said. Gottschalk said the de- partment has had to pull a couple of people out of the lake before, but this is the first time he remembered ever having to rescue a dog. The department has a ba- nana boat that it can use for ice and water rescues, but at least in this instance, it needed.
