LocaL A4 Thursday, October 31, 2013 Beaver Dam Daily Citizen Waupun Lions Club WAUPUN Waupun City Administrator Kyle Clark spoke to the Wau- pun Lions Club last week about the many projects and activities happening in Waupun; including the addition of a new baseball complex which has drawn a substantial number of visitors for tournaments, a Taco Bell and slated to open in the Spring of 2014, a new AmericInn hotel. Clark said many of the existing downtown buildings have undergone significant renovation par- ticularly on their facades and that several new busi- nesses have started in the downtown area as well. Clark said Federal Mogul is in the process of expand- ing its facility in the Wau- pun Industrial Park and ground has been broken for the new aquatic facility in Fond du Lac County Park and substantial progress has been made on linking bike trails on the west side of town with those on the east side. Clark said the strategic plan for Waupun includes working toward a site for a banquet facility, and there has been some discussion about opening a movie theater. The potential for these types of projects as well as the new AmericInn Hotel came about due to a land swap between the city and the school district, which resulted in the clos- ing of what was previously known as Washington School and the reopening of what was previously Jef- ferson School on the west side of town.

This school is currently named Meadow View Primary. He said the city has also experienced residential developments on the west side of town, along with a sixteen unit apartment complex on the east side, with another sixteen unit apartment complex cur- rently under construc- tion on the east side. The construction of these apartments along with the expansion of businesses on Shaler Drive has resulted in a significant expan- sion of Shaler Drive from Main Street to the south. However, at this time Shaler Drive will not con- nect with Claggett Avenue because portions of that right of way run through the township of Chester. Besides improve- ments and developments in the infrastructure of Waupun, Clark said the city had also encouraged many cultural activities as well.

In addition to celebrations such as the Waupun and Volksfest, the Waupun Fine Arts organization has promoted and sponsored concerts and art exhibits throughout the year. Also, a group called Waupun Festivals has been incor- porated to coordinate the various cultural activities in Waupun. During the summer of 2013 this group sponsored a four-day fes- tival which included Cajun music and cuisine, as well as music from past and present local bands. This was tied in with July Fourth celebration. Clark said the efforts are geared toward making Waupun a great place to live, work and play, with a hope that economic growth will also occur.
