Vincent de Paul, and Beth Matravers, a member of the St. Joseph Church Conference of St. Vincent de Paul in Waupun, spoke to the Waupun Lions Club at a recent meeting. They said the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international organi- zation whose works of charity are carried out locally by members in individual Catholic com- munities worldwide.

The society was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a law student in Paris. The primary mission was to assist the poor. The society was named after St. Vincent de Paul (1581- 1660), a priest who was known as the of The society was first established in the United States in 1845 in St. Louis, most probably due to that ties to France.

While the organization is closely connected to the ministry of the Cath- olic Church, the organi- zation and its members serve clients in need without regard to reli- gion, race or nationality. The St. Vincent de Paul Society provides assis- tance with rent, utilities, clothing and food, as well as with other types of assistance that help cli- ents get through difficult times. There are set limits on the amount and fre- quency of assistance that can be provided to any one client because the resources are limited. St.

Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores are open to the general public as resale shops, with profits going to fund services for the needy. One hundred percent of profits gener- ated by the store and 95 percent of financial dona- tions go directly to the needy because the orga- administrative costs are very low. Mem- bers volunteer all their services. Profits from the stores provide about half of the funds for financial assistance to the poor. Clients also utilize the thrift stores via a voucher system which allows them access to clothing and other needed household items.

St. Vincent de Paul Society has provided services to the needy in the Fond du Lac County area since 1934. During the past fiscal year St. Vincent de Paul provided more than $234,000 of assistance to the needy in the Fond du Lac County area, including more than $30,000 in assistance to the needy of Waupun. More than 2,600 fami- lies, including more than 7,900 individuals, were visited by society mem- bers during that fiscal year alone.

Anyone interested in supporting the services of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Fond du Lac can do so via direct con- tributions, donations of gently used clothing and household items to the thrift store, or by patron- izing the thrift store at 330 N. Peters Fond du Lac. SOCIAL-CIVIC NEWS SUBMITTED Jean White, left, communications director for the Fond du Lac Council of St. Vincent de Paul, and Beth Matravers, a member of the St.
