HIWAY HAL Special Feature northet side of this camp is a big rock formation It just comes up out of the ground like the fabled bean stalk Nestled at the foot is the camp The soil is light so that rains are quickly soaked into the ground The natural grove of trees offers plenty of shade and Mr and Mrs Lake take their job as hosts with such effortless ease that you feel right at home the minute you alight from your rig They have 81 regular campsites We found everything from pup tents to 30-foot RV jobs camped there They have just two classes of campers The two classes are: those lucky enough to get a campsite and those who are not One thing -looked pretty good to us They have a group shelter-house with campsites all around it There may be a hundred other camps that have the same thing but his is the first time we have seen anything just like that forgot to count those campsites but there must have been at least 20 Of course this part of the camp is used on a reservation basis only I am not going to give the date of the Apple Butter Festival All campsites are sold out and a number requests for sites sent back $rJ a- a- a a- a a a-a-a a -a i Totem poles decorate' the entrance of the iron kettle The apples are peeled on apple peelers and then halved and quartered Then they are cooked in this big iron kettle I know how many pints of apple butter are made but I do know they have to have an encore performance on another weekend Lots of the campers pitch in and help Some run the apple peelers some stir the big kettle and only a special few are samplers Out of all the apple butter made last year Mrs Lake had only a few pints for herself I would like to have more details to bring to our readers but two more campers came along and they added their version at the same time Most of the time I can sort out things when two talk to me at once but my tuner work with a program with a three station input One thing was sure Everyone has a big time and serious sickness sudden death is the only thing that keeps everyone from coming back next year for the apple butter festival The camp is 14 mile north of the Dells on 13 and then 2 miles east from that sign Watch for chickens ducks and turtles when you turn We passed a number of good campgrounds to go to one that had a very special feature At a certain season the whole camp makes apple butter We knew we could never get a campsite at that camp when they are making apple butter but we wanted to see the place and hear about this activity firsthand Barbican Campground is the and just drive up Highway 13 and look for the All cars trucks campers and bicycles seemed to go north on 13 that day After ten miles of driving north of the Dells I said not going to look for those signs any more We must be way past Our speedometer was right on the 14 mile point from the Dells when we saw the sign pointing to the right and did we ever turn right at that point Our vehicle has no elevator flaps but somehow we missed about a dozen chickens three ducks and a turtle crossing that sideroad where we turned A woman Came out of the house and shaded her eyes with her hand as she watched us go up the road We took a different road coming -back Barbican Campground is a very pleasant place On the NYERERE VISITS CUBA MIAMI (UPI) President Julius Nyerere of the African Republic of Tanzania larrived in Havana
