PORTAGE DAILYt REGISTER Mon Dec 21 1970 Page 10 Portage High School? Monday Dec 21 1970 Vol 2 No 4 Crowding forces 8 i if feet reached writer says of classes A beginning with the 20th mod on up to the first mod in the morning As a result a great majority of students had quite a few free mods in the morning This was unfortunate since this left an overload in areas such as the library etc As an example on Monday mornings therei are about 500 students 1 free the first couple of mods and only about 250 are attending classes When jhere are this many -students free at one time the question is where to put them all The re-scheduling this time will be done in such a way that there will be less students free at any given time to jprevent the pressures which build up in the resource center library etc One more divided classrgom will be added at the beginning of the year which will make a total of six divided classrooms In the divided classrooms there are two classes in session instead of just one for which the room was originally built Of course these rooms alleviate the shortage of space somewhat but they indeed are no substitute for additional and very much needed building space Many teachers have stated that they want a change in their course structure to better instruct the student and this change will go in effect in co-junction with the re-scheduling of classes this year- To the editor: This letter is concerned with the school budget cut For the past week the whole school has been in an up-oar all protesting the unjustness that the city council has done to us We are now to go through the remaining school year under an inadequate money budget It seems to me as though the citizens of Portage have made a poor choice in selecting their representatives These men were duly elected to represent the people and meet their needs I understand the situation when the aldermen vote according to their own judgement had they not heard from their constituents? However this was not the case I am sure they heard from the public many of whom were opposed to the financial slice As a matter of fact many of the interested and concerned voters attended tlje Public Hearing in expectancies of being heard This meeting was held December 1st at 7 pm in the City HalL This was also the date decided upon for the voting of the budget So you see the council members had made up their minds long before this meeting and it is doubtful that anyone person could or would alter the resolutions True the meeting was conducted on a democratic basis but the officials in power had no concern for those attending They ran that meeting Thorp offers Any high school senior planning on going to college may want to take interest in a scholarship program currently being sponsored by the THORP FINANCE FOUNDATION I There will be i two $1000 scholarships awarded for use at the choice to be used toward the payment of college expenses -any of the acredited Wisconsin colleges or universities in addition local zone winners from each of office areas will be elected and will receive a $25 US Savings Competition is open to all high school students who are seniors this year and plan to go to college next year Students interested in this program must submit an essay not exceeding 500 words in length on one of the following subjects: (1) Can A Student Work Constructively Toward Changing Our Christmas wish Talent- show disregarding and ignoring the public opinion All at once die public hearing was closed and the most we could do was stand by watching the inevitable thrown at us Yes it happened and only because we let it creep up on it I feel there are many factors that led up to our loss The importance of the budget cut was not stressed hard enough and too few students took an active interest in what would happen After all we are the being hurt right? I also believe the people in this town are by far too concerned over money and self development They seem to realize how badly this is going to effect us in the future How are we ever going to be ready to compete with the outside world if we are not conditioned now? We the youth are developing for the future and it will become the product of whether it will be physical or intellectual So come on all you students who have just woke up and seen the damage done It may be too late to change the city decision this year but you can bet that they will try to pull this again next year Maybe we will have a voice in the upcoming decision and perhaps they will Consider the students side as well For we are directly involved and I think it time we stand up and be heard! Name withheld scholarship (2) Is The Value of Moral In addition each entry must be neatly typed and accompanied by an official entry blank Winners of the two scholarships will be picked by a committee of educators and announced on March29 1971 Finalists will be judged on their essay plus academic standing and achievement Any student wishing to apply for this scholarship may see any one of the high school guidance counselors NOTE: In an aid to help high school students we will be publishing further notices of any and all scholarships which may be of interest to the student There are virtually hundreds of different scholarships and other aids available to students to help defray the cost of college education and other expenses as well In an effort on our part we will try to make some of these programs known to the students name There are 150 members in Pen cinh ms year- With ball games every week there 1C miltK TV is much for them to do Posters are made orange ribbons are prepared skits are presented and school colors are worn to the games I The officers were chosen' by Mrs Runke the advisor At least four students tried out for each office Congratulations go out to Alecia Bolgren president Pat Gruber vice-president and Joni Monroe secretary-treasurer Point chairmans were also selected from each class There duty is to keep track of all the points earned by the members!
