We all love life, but theres danger in loving life too much, especially when its somebody elses life and youre putting them through something theyve said theyd never want. I dont know that it should come as a news flash to anybody that stuff like this happens all the time. We all die, and sometimes youre lucky enough to exercise at least a modicum of control over it.

If youre real lucky, there are compassionate people around who understand that need. They never talked about it much, but Im pretty sure my parents let my grandfather die after his last stroke left him pretty much brain dead for a long time. I know that when the time came for my father, he told me he wanted to die, so we withheld intervention that might otherwise have prolonged his time. My mom fought nearly to the end, at least until the last Hail Mary treatment didnt work, so we then shifted the conversation from the miracle of life to the miracle of death. Were Christians, so the promise of victory over death isnt some theoretical notion, but a recorded fact.

And for us anyway, that doesnt mean life at all costs. lAt least in our tradition, 'death is denied its sting, so theres no reason to fear it. -Certainly theres no reason to put if off unnaturally. I am reminded of that this week by the story in the garden, where Peter wanted to keep fighting and Jesus told him to put his sword away. Hed decided against calling in an army of angels to extend life.

Instead, the man who taught us there is a time for healing also taught us there is a time for dying. And then living forever. notification of his family, according to Spencer. Stetenfeld said his organization wont oppose the increase unless gas tax money is shifted toward uses other than road construction. Gov. Jim Doyle has proposed shifting transportation money into the general fund in a budgetbalancing move.

We have not supported repeal of gas tax indexing in the absence of broader transportation taxation reform, Stetenfeld said. Do we think its the best mechanism for taxation increases? No. He agreed with Hines that repeal is unlikely. Stetenfeld attributed rising gas prices to the skyrocketing cost of crude oil, which has doubled in two years. This cost has been boosted by increased demand as economies around the world have rebounded, encouraging travel.

Meanwhile, political instability in oil-producing regions has cast uncertainty upon future oil GAS Continued from Page 1 proposed repealing the automatic annual increase called indexing calling it an invisible tax hike the Legislature should vote oh. In 2003-04, the gas tax raised more than $934 million, according to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau, making up nearly two-thirds of the states transportation revenue. State Rep. Doc Hines, R-Oxford, said he isnt a fan of the automatic increase, but feels the 20-year-old system is one most drivers are willing to live with. He added its unlikely his colleagues would seek to eliminate a revenue source while theyre working to remedy a projected budget deficit.

I dont see the Joint Finance Committee saying, Well, we ought to do away with this right now, Hines said. Im not going to go out and crusade to do away with the increase in the gas tax. Do vour homework. Randolph D. Brandt is editor 'OfThe Journal Times in Wis.
