willing to destroy the building park managers finally boarded up the cottage and left it to cope with Mother elements for over twenty years Meanwhile in a home across the lake from the abandoned masterpiece Audrey Laatsch wondered if something could be done to restore the Seth Peterson Cottage But it until discussing the idea with a friend that she figured out how funds could be raised to restore and maintain the historical home In the fall of 1988 Audrey Laatsch decided she was going to approach state park officials to see if it would be possible to not only make the Seth Peterson Cottage functional again but to rent it out to visitors who wanted to enjoy the uniqueness of a Wright design in the woods of Wisconsin on Mirror Lake had no experience in preservation or fund-raising but knew I could Audrey claimed as she continued to explain how the home was restored By February of 1989 Audrey idea had caught the attention of many and a meeting was held in Wisconsin Dells to discuss turning the idea into a reality Representatives from the Mirror Lake Association the State Historical Society the Department of Natural Resources the local legislators and interested members of the public all agreed that something could and should be done to rehabilitate the cottage for short-term vacation rentals In June of 1992 after many legal and financial obstacles $350000 in restoration costs extremely generous donations and a priceless amount of volunteer time the Seth Peterson Cottage Conservancy held a dedication for the rehabilitated cottage The Seth Peterson Cottage was to become the only Wright structure in which the public could experience life as one of his clients Since then the cottage has been extremely successful Instead of the 131 day minimum occupancy rate needed to ensure financial stability the cottage has been occupied about 325 days annually since its dedication and the cottage is almost completely booked for the next two years Due to the success all restoration costs have been paid a radiant floor hot-water heating system has been installed more furnishings have been added and maintenance will continue to be exem- Atrenn Divorces in adding that the firm found items of with the cash flow operations plary If Wright were alive today certainly he would be proud that one of his public structures was being used the way he designed every structure to be used function then form However one cannot conceptualize the beauty of this unique masterpiece on Mirror Lake until visited So the Cottage does welcome visitors to a monthly open house on the second Sunday of each month from 1-4 pm There is little documentary detail about the commission design and construction of the Seth Peterson Cottage We know that Seth Peterson was bom and grew up in Black Earth Wisconsin Fascinated by work after graduating from high school in 1954 Peterson applied for admission to the Taliesin Fellowship as an apprentice but afford the required $1500 annual tuition After being turned away two more times Peterson joined the Army to gain computer training Upon his return in 1958 he bought a small cottage and 118 acres of land on Mirror Lake But only a few months after Peterson moved in a fire apparently caused by a faulty space heater or electrical connection destroyed the cottage Neither the Taliesin archives nor personal correspondence indicates exactly when Peterson approached Frank Uoyd Wright for a cottage design but family members believe it was some time after the original cottage on his Mirror Lake property burned down During the height of career it is not known why he agreed to design the tiny cottage for Peterson Was it because Wright knew Peterson greatly admired and respected his work? Was it because they both happened to be bom on the same day in June? Or was it simply because Peterson sent a $600 check against the total $1350 design fee? In any event in April of 1959 the final drawings were completed just before Wright died And in July of 1959 Peterson and his parents took out a $12000 loan and contracted with local Lake Delton builder Macky Adams to build the cottage And on June 8th a special open house welcomes visitors who helped turn the dream into a dreamhouse Not only are their accomplishments remarkable but after reading the long-awaited book entitled Rescuing A Lost Masterwork by John Eifler and Kristin Visser one can truly appreciate the volunteer time the donations and dedication of all involved in the restoration and preservation of the Seth Peterson Cottage in Mirror Lake State Park LARGEST SELECTION OF CRAFT SUPPLIES DRIEIVSILK FLORALS The Daily Register Proudly Serving Columbia Marquette Adams Counties Since 1886 309 DeWitt Street PO Box 470 Portage WI 53901 VOLUME 141 NUMBER 167 wwrnni None to report Edmund Hulet III Production Director John Barber Jr Press Manager Carrie Tennies Composing Mgr Susan Breidenbach Composing Mgr Kim Polzer Classified Mgr ABOUT THE NEWSPAPER Entered as Second Class matter at the Post Office of Portage Wisconsin Publication Number: 439020 Published daily except Sundays Memorial Day July 4 Labor Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day and New Day Subscription Rates By Carrier $925 per Month By Carrier $9800 per Year Mail subscription rates are: In County $970 per month Out of County $1040 per month Out of State $1200 per month Missed Newspaper If you did not receive your newspaper please contact your carrier or call our Circulation Department between 6:30 am and 1000 am Monday-Friday and between 8 00 am and 10:00 am Saturday Corrections Readers who believe an error has been published should call the Daily Register Ask for the City Desk on articles involving news and the Sports Desk for sports stories When a report is found to be wrong or misleading a correction or clarification will be published David Gentry Publisher George Piper Managing Editor Jay Anderle Marketing Director Cheryl Troost Controller Michael Giuffre Circulation Director YOU CAN REACH US AT 742-2111 OR 1-800-236-2110 Advertising Sales Matt Gorsuch Sales Mgr Ext 312 Thomas Dugan Ext 330 Amos Deman Ext 328 Ruth Collins Ext 301 Classified Advertising Kim Polzer Classified Mgr Ext 310 Kimberly Hendnckson Ext 332 News Department Lisa Cestkowski Lifestyles Editor Ext 319 Ray Halstead Sports Editor Ext 321 Wendy McCaffrey Reporter Ext 318 Steve Elbow Reporter Ext 320 Cathy Idzerda Reporter Ext 317 Brenda Christopherson News ClerkExt 304 Circulation Department Michael Giuffre Circulation Dir Ext 323 Jill Peter Asst Circulation Dir Ext 303 Debbie Sprague Circulation Clerk Ext 302 Accounting Department Cheryl Troost Controller Ext 326 Sook Park Ext 333 Production Department Edmund Hulet III Prod Dir Ext 335 Carrie Tennies Composing Mgr Ext 305 Susan Breidenbach Comp Mgr Ext 335 Better shutters by design Vinylbih technology brings you the warmth of southern-style shutters with the most advanced product in the industry ylblft fl8 shutters are custom mode easy to install and require 5i virtually no maintenance Only Vinylbih offers you the quality price and service plus our exclusive lifetime Worronty Only at: CHRISTMAS IN JULY! save 3050 on all Christmas gifts and craft supplies These prices will not be offered again tills year so hurry in for best selection!
